Different AHAs have different lipophilicity and penetration. They work in two stages to reduce damage to the skin:
Phase 1: Rapidly penetrating acids exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin and self-neutralize without penetrating deeper. This allows the second phase of fruit acid to penetrate deeper into the skin more effectively.
Phase 2: Slower penetrating acids gently reach deeper into the epidermis to target different issues.
Using two acids with different penetration rates together provides a more comprehensive treatment that can address a variety of skin concerns while being less irritating for sensitive skin. This versatility enables customization to individual skin needs and goals.
